profilepicture Prof. Luc Van Gool is principal investigator of the VarCity project and professor for computer vision at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland and University of Leuven, Belgium. His research interests include image understanding and recognition, procedural modeling of cities, texture synthesis, image retrieval, 3D reconstruction, robot vision and cultural heritage.
Prof. Van Gool is founder and head of the independent Computer Vision Laboratory (CVL) since 2002, part-time professor at ETH since 1998 and part-time full professor at the University of Leuven and head of the VISICS group since 1996. He received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in electrical engineering in 1991 from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
He is co-founder of numerous spin-offs like Eyetronics, GeoAutomation, upicto, kooaba, procedural, etc. He was awarded several awards incl. best paper and video awards (VAST'06, CVPR'07, ACCV'07, ICRA'09, etc) and industrial prizes, incl. an EITC, Henri Ford Conservation, GoldenEye, Innovation Electrosuisse, etc.
  
profilepicture Dr. Hayko Riemenschneider was team leader of the VarCity project and postdoctoral researcher under Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Laboratory at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of 2D and 3D computer vision focusing on large-scale urban reconstruction for semantic and dynamic modeling. His research interests include joint object detection and segmentation, semantic scene understanding, procedural 3D reconstructions, next best view analysis as well as object tracking and retrieval.
Hayko received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science in 2012 with the topic of object detection joining shape and segmentation (supervised by Prof. Horst Bischof), a Master of Science (MSc) in 2008 in the topic of object tracking and learning, and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 2006 from the Graz University of Technology, Austria.
  
profilepicture Dr. Ralf Dragon was a postdoctoral researcher under Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Laboratory at ETH Zurich. He is working in the analysis of video sequences from various sources to capture the dynamics of cities. His research interest includes object detection and tracking, motion segmentation as well as keypoint-based methods in computer vision.
Before Ralf joined VarCity, he was working towards his PhD degree at the Institut fuer Informationsverarbeitung (TNT), Leibniz Universitaet Hannover. In his PhD thesis 'Keypoint-Based Object Segmentation' he developed privacy-enhancing keypoint cameras which only output a stream of image keypoints instead of the images themselves. From 2007 to 2009, his work at the TNT was directed towards the inspection of surfaces of mechanical components. In 2006, Ralf received his Dipl.-Ing. degree with distinction and received the VDE study award.
  
profilepicture Dr. Junseok Kwon was postdoctoral researcher under Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Laboratory at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of object tracking to capture the dynamics of cities. His research interests include visual tracking, visual surveillance, and Monte Carlo Sampling method and its variants.
Junseok received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in electrical engineering and computer science in 2013, a Master of Science (MSc) in 2008 in the topic of object tracking (supervised by Prof. Kyoung Mu Lee), and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 2006 from the Seoul National University, Korea.
  
profilepicture Dr. Kenneth Vanhoey was a postdoctoral researcher under Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Laboratory at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of computer graphics and its interaction with computer vision. His research interests include by-example texture synthesis, reconstruction of both geometry and appearance of acquired data, as well as computational photography.
Kenneth received a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science in 2014 with the topic of reconstruction and visualisation of the appearance of objects related to cultural heritage (supervised by Prof. Jean-Michel Dischler) at the University of Strasbourg, France, where he also received a Bachelor (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) in 2008 and 2010, respectively. Before joining ETH, Kenneth had a 16-month postdoctoral fellowship at Inria, France, under Dr. George Drettakis.
  
profilepicture Dr. Danda Pani Paudel was a postdoctoral researcher under Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. His research interests include visual-SLAM, mathematical optimization, and geometric problems in computer vision. Currently, he is working in the field of vision-based city scale traffic flow modeling.
Danda Pani received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2015, and a Master's degree in computer vision in 2012, form University of Bourgogne, France. He also worked as a research scholar at University of Strasbourg, France, from 2013 to 2015, while devising global methods for 2D-3D registration problems.
  
  
profilepicture Andras Bodis-Szomoru was a PhD candidate of Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of 3D computer vision, currently focusing on Multi-View Surface reconstruction (MVS), geometry processing and semantization of 3D urban models from airborne and street-side images. He is also familiar with related technologies such as Structure-from-Motion (SfM), Visual Odometry (VO), Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and 3D perception for autonomous driving (ADAS).
Formerly, Andras was an assistant lecturer at TU Budapest (BME) and a research assistant at the Institute for Computer Science and Control (SZTAKI) in Hungary, with research on camera calibration and stereo vision for autonomous driving. Andras received his MSc degree in electrical engineering in 2005 from TU Budapest.
  
profilepicture Dengxin Dai was a PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of architectural scene labeling and synthesis. His research interests include: texture synthesis, image inpainting, semantic scene labeling, and image classification.
Dengxin got a Master of Science (MSc) in 2010 in the topic of large-scale satellite image classification, and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in 2008 in Electronic Engineering, both from Wuhan University, Wuhan, China. Since 2016, Dengxin is leading his own team on the topic of automotive driving.
  
profilepicture Michael Gygli was a PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. His research lies in the area of affective image and video classification, specifically he is working on capturing interestingness and semantic unusualness. His research interests further include video summarization and low-level image descriptors.
Michael holds a MSc in computer science, which he received in 2012 from the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, France.
  
profilepicture Nikolay Kobyshev was a PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of object reconstructability. His research interests include 3D reconstruction, building modelling and semantic segmentation.
Nikolay received a Master of Science (MSc) in Computer Science in 2013 from ETH Zurich and holds two Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees (in Computer Science and in Economics) in 2011, both from Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Russia.
  
profilepicture Till Kroeger was a PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of 3D city reconstruction with a focus on video registration and optical flow. His research interests include Structure from Motion, modeling of geometry, vanishing points and stereo depth.
Till received an MSc in Applied Computer Science in 2012 and a Magister in History and Middle Eastern Studies in 2011 from the University of Heidelberg, Germany.
  
profilepicture Santiago Manen was a PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. He is working in the field of detection and simulation of vehicles and pedestrians in urban environments. His research interests include: generic object proposals, object detection, tracking and scene understanding.
Santiago received a MSc in Robotics, Systems and Control in 2012 from ETH Zurich and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering in 2010 from IQS Barcelona, Spain.
  
profilepicture Dr. Andelo Martinovic was a PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the VISICS Lab at KU Leuven. He is working in the field of inverse procedural modeling of architecture. His research interests include shape grammars for procedural 3D reconstructions, grammar induction, and parsing of facade imagery.
Andelo received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at KU Leuven in 2015, a Master of Science (MSc) with highest honors in Computer Engineering in 2010 and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computing in 2008, both from the University of Zagreb, Croatia.
  
profilepicture Dr. Markus Mathias was a postdoctoral researcher under Prof. Luc Van Gool in the VISICS Lab at KU Leuven. He is working in the field of object detection, inverse procedural modeling. His research include: pedestrian detection, architectural element detection, traffic sign recognition and semantic facade labeling.
Markus received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at KU Leuven in 2013 and master degree in computer science from the Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany in 2007.
  
profilepicture Dr. Julien Weissenberg was a research assistant and PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. He is working on urban city modeling and inverse procedural modeling. His main research focus is on grammatical inference, semantic segmentation, tree search, architecture and computer-aided design.
Julien received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science in 2014 and a MSc in Advanced Computing in 2009 from Imperial College London and a Dipl.-Ing. degree in Computer Science (MSc) from ENSIIE Grande Ecole, Paris in 2009.

profilepicture Prof. Tat-Jen Cham was a visiting professor in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. Tat-Jen is an Associate Professor in the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, and Director of the Centre for Multimedia & Network Technology (CeMNet). His research interest are broadly in computer vision and machine learning.
He received his BA in Engineering in 1993 and his PhD in 1996, both from the University of Cambridge, and was also a research scientist in the DEC / Compaq Cambridge Research Lab in Boston 1998-2001.
profilepicture Dr. Massimo Mauro was a visiting PhD student in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. His PhD is supervised by Prof. Riccardo Leonard in the Telecommunications group at University of Brescia. He is working in the field of next best image selection for 3D landmark reconstruction.
Massimo received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science in 2014 and a Telecommunications Engineering Master's degree (cum laude) at the University of Brescia in 2010.
profilepicture Dr. Alex Mansfield was a research assistant and PhD student supervised by Prof. Luc Van Gool in the Computer Vision Lab at ETH Zurich. His research interests lie at the intersection of computer vision and computer graphics, specifically the introduction semantic cues into synthesis problems such as image and 3D shape completion.
Alex received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in computer science in 2014 and a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) in Information and Computer Engineering from the University of Cambridge in 2009.

logo GeoAutomation is a joint venture between the VISICS department of the University of Leuven and a surveying & engineering company, SPC. It was formed in 2007 and since then GeoAutomation has continued to improve and remain at the top of the mobile mapping industry.
logo Arc3D Webservice is a family of web tools for remote 3D reconstruction. It allows users to upload digital images to Arc3D servers where a 3D reconstruction of the scene is performed and reported back to the user. It is operated by the VISICS group of University of Leuven since 2006.
logo Kooaba was founded in 2006 as a spin-off company from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. The key mission is to unlock the information captured in images using sophisticated image recognition technology.
logo ESRI Procedural was founded in 2007 as a spin-off company from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. It allows users to create and design 3D urban environments leveraging their existing GIS data and enables large-scale civic planning efforts and will provide immediate visual feedback on the impact of planning decisions, such as setbacks and floor-specific zoning changes. It was acquired by ESRI in 2011 for further development of smart 3D city models.
logo upicto was founded in 2012 as a spin-off company from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. Its key mission is to capture the essence of a moment! As videos are becoming the dominant form of media, through which professional organizations and consumers express their interests and visions. Upicto renders such videos easy to organize, analyze, and retrieve.
logo smarterbettercities was founded in 2012 as a spin-off company from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland. Its key mission is to offer urban evaluation and decision making process more affordable and accessible for urban planners, municipalities, architects, real estate agencies, and more.
